Your Hometown Credit Union since 1933
Our History
In the early 1900s, the local U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of a system of federal harbors all along the Great Lakes and made improvements to the harbor in Erie, Pennsylvania. In 1933, to better respond to the growing need to serve federal employee groups in the Buffalo District, Buffalo Service Credit Union opened its doors to employees and their families.
This new style of banking provided more important financial support to the community than banks could, and to this day. Credit unions focus on the needs of their members and the community as a whole; and unlike corporate banks, profits are returned to members, not shareholders.
As the idea of credit unions grew, we grew too, adding more members and services over the next five decades. In 1983, we moved into the landmark Dulski Federal Building on Huron Street in downtown Buffalo, where we opened a branch inside the building where many of our members came to work every day.
Banks are designed to generate profit for their owners; credit unions give members a place to manage their finances at the best possible terms…
During this timeframe, two employee groups were added to our “field of membership”: the Federal Reserve Bank of Buffalo and the Wackenhut Security Company.
In 2005, Buffalo Service Credit Union moved into a brand new building at the Niagara Center, once again staying in close proximity to our growing membership.
Next, in 2011, our Board voted to seek a community charter to open up our membership to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Erie County. To this day, we continue to grow strong as a result of this effort.
…which come to members in the form of reduced fees, higher dividends, and typically, better loan rates.
Over time, we established two additional branch offices: WNY Health Care Systems Veterans Administration Hospital at 3495 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo, and the AppleTree Business Park at 2875 Union Road, Cheektowaga.
Finally, on June 1st, 2022, with an eye to the future and to better reflect its expanded service area, we changed our name to ONE Credit Union. The new name, along with a new logo and branding, became official on June 11, 2022.
Jim Furman, ONE Credit Union CEO states, “We chose to change our name to better reflect our expanded service area. Our new name makes it clear to eligible members, even those without a connection to Buffalo, that they are welcome to join to the oldest credit union in Erie County.”
In November 2022, ONE Credit Union purchased a building at 3517 Union Road in Cheektowaga and moved out of the AppleTree Business Park. The new building has the convenience of drive-through banking and a drive-up ATM.
We’re still growing and planning and looking to the future to make sure our members always have the best banking experience.
